We recently welcomed a student to Summit Environmental for a week’s work experience. During his time with us, Ashton was taught about fire risk assessments, fire door inspections and researched what makes us stand out from our competition. Over the course of the week, we asked him to keep a journal: his reflections on the week give a behind-the-scenes look at Summit Environmental.

Day 1 - July 1, 2024

Today marked the beginning of my journey with WEX(Work Experience), and it started with a warm welcome from Mark. He took the time to sit down with me and walk through the plans for the upcoming week. It was reassuring to see the structured approach they have here, ensuring that I hit the ground running.

Mark also provided a comprehensive overview of the business, highlighting its core values and strategic goals. Learning about their mission to innovate within the industry was inspiring, and I am eager to contribute to their vision.

The day ended with a sense of anticipation and readiness to dive into the tasks ahead. Tomorrow promises to be a day of learning and putting plans into action. I look forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead at WEX.

Reflection: Meeting Mark and understanding the company's ethos was enlightening. I feel positive about integrating into the team and contributing effectively.

Day 2 – July 2, 2024

Fire Risk Assessments

Today, I had the opportunity to meet Joe, who guided me through fire risk assessments in a block of flats. We traversed through each floor, meticulously examining every corner and crevice for potential hazards. His insights into fire safety protocols were truly knowledgeable, emphasizing the importance of prevention and preparedness.

As we delved deeper into the assessment, Joe shared practical strategies for fire risks and ensuring the safety of residents. Beyond the technicalities, Joe's knowledge for safeguarding lives was evident in every explanation and recommendation he offered.

Reflecting on today's experience, I realize the immense responsibility that comes with ensuring the safety of those living in communal spaces. Joe's guidance has not only enhanced my understanding of fire safety assessments, but also reinforced the significance of thoroughness and vigilance in such crucial matters.

Day 3 – July 3, 2024

Today marked a significant stride in my progress. I delved deep into the competitor analysis that Mark had entrusted me with. The exercise revealed both challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Reflecting on today's work, I realize the importance of this groundwork: it is not merely about catching up with rivals, but about carving our unique path forward. Tomorrow promises to be another day of refining and implementing these insights, ensuring that we are not only competitive but also innovative in our approach.

Day 4 - July 4, 2024

Fire Door Inspections

Today was another insightful day spent with Joe, focusing on fire door inspections. Joe patiently guided me through the intricacies of ensuring fire doors are up to code and fully functional.

We began the day by reviewing the regulations and safety standards that govern fire doors. Joe emphasized the critical role these doors play in containing fire and smoke during emergencies, underscoring the importance of regular inspections to maintain their effectiveness.

Throughout the day, Joe demonstrated how to check for proper seals, clearances, and signs of wear or damage that could compromise the door's integrity.

By the end of the day, I felt more confident in my ability to conduct thorough fire door inspections: Joe’s mentorship was invaluable.

Day 5 – July 5, 2024

Company Interview, Competitor Analysis, and School Inspection

Today, I spent the day with Mark and Maddy, starting by participating in a real company interview. This experience was invaluable, providing insights into the professional interview process. We then reviewed the competitor analysis project I had been working on, where Mark provided constructive feedback and helped refine my analytical skills.

In the afternoon, we conducted a school inspection, allowing me to apply my developing skills in a practical setting.

Overall, the day was a blend of learning and hands-on experience, enhancing my confidence and competence in various tasks.
